Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
