No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
